Consider these four fictional human vignettes.

Case 1: A national politician is the chairman of a powerful legislative committee and is accused of sexually molesting young boys who work as pages in the Capitol.

Case 2: A respected pastor with a syndicated Sunday-morning television program on 200 stations is accused of soliciting donations for missionary work in Africa while all the time he is salting enormous amounts of money away in a numbered Swiss bank account for his own future use.

Case 3: A grandfather who is retired from a distinguished career as a federal judge is accused of an incestuous relationship with his ten-year-old granddaughter.

Case 4: A district attorney is arrested and charged in connection with a series of 17 grisly kidnap murders.

What do these people have in common? Each is above reproach, at least on the surface. Each strongly proclaims his innocence. Each has a loyal following of supporters who say there is no way he could be guilty as charged.

And, each person in these fictional case studies has one more thing in common. Each is troubled by one or more demons who induced him to commit the crime and to effectively lie to protest his innocence. However, the fact that there was demonic inducement doesn't make the person a demon. The presence of the demon in the soul and mind may have been intermittent, lasting only seconds at a time. The rest of the time, the person may have appeared completely normal, even to close associates.

More recently, the large number of Catholic clergypersons that have become involved in accusations of sexual misconduct with children raise red flags all over the landscape. Later on, when we talk about the identifiable symptoms of demon possession, you draw your own conclusions about the possibility of demonic involvement in the Catholic sex scandals.

The purpose of this handbook is two-fold. First, it's designed to help you identify the demonic source of objectionable behavior which is similar to these fictional cases, and to others mentioned throughout the book.

But second, and most important, the purpose of this handbook is to show you how a person can become free of demon possession through the blood of Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. See Part 3.

"There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils [sic 'demons']. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors, and hail a materialist or a magician with the same delight." C. S. Lewis, from his "Preface to The Screwtape Letters".

The idea that there is such a thing as demons and literal demon possession has always been a low hum in the background noise of the history of civilization. Even the most primitive cultures have a belief in spirits, evil and otherwise, which become involved in the lives of human beings.

There was a time when the concept of demon possession became more than a low hum. This was during the life of Jesus Christ as recorded in the first four books of the New Testament of the Bible, known as the Gospels. In this documentation, we read conversations between Jesus and demons and see the destructive impact of these demons on human beings.

The incidents of demon possession written about in the Gospels have been dismissed by many as the result of ignorance and superstition. Skeptics claim that what is clearly labeled as demon possession by the Gospel writers is nothing more than misdiagnosed mental illness, epilepsy, and perceptual disabilities.

This booklet is specifically written for human service professionals and paraprofessionals who serve people in our education, criminal justice, and health facilities and agencies. Many of the clients of these human services are people who are or who have been in crises. And it's people in crisis who seem to be most likely to have histories of demon possession.

Since 1981, I've made a study of what the Bible has to say about demons and what current affairs reveal about the existence of -- and the activities of -- Satan's demons. This book is not designed to glorify demons but rather to provide information about their existence and methods, and to warn of the dangers they present to our society as a whole.

I refer to persons who are troubled by demons as "victims". These primary victims can cause problems for secondary victims as well. For example, a primary victim who works in a day care center and is induced by demons to lust for sexual activity with children can make secondary victims of dozens of the young clients with whom this primary victim comes in contact.

The most important part of this book is not the Biblical accounts of demon possession in the days of Jesus, it's not the four primary symptoms of demon possession (violence, lust, greed, and persuasion), it's not the long list of activities which can put humans at risk of demon possession. The most important message of this book is the fact that there is a solution to the problem of demon possession. The most important message of this book is in Part 3 where I give detailed information of how a victim of demon possession can receive deliverance through the blood of Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. In fact, you might be wise to read Part 3 first, and then go back and read Part 1 and Part 2.

There is a danger of being misunderstood in writing a book like this. My intent in not to demonize you who have been victimized by demons and drawn into socially-unacceptable and illegal behaviors. Instead, my purpose is to inform you of the deliverance from your demon possession which is explained in Part 3.

This booklet is dedicated to you who have been possessed and oppressed by demons, without knowing either the source of your torment or the source of your deliverance.

Especially the children.
